Mā whero, mā pako; ka oti ai te mahi
The task shall be achieved through unity

We’re on a mission to save Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere
Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere is one of Aotearoa’s most important wetland habitats—and also one of its most polluted.
Whakaora Te Waihora is a long-term ecological and cultural restoration programme led by the Te Waihora Co-Governance Group, working to restore the lake’s mana, mauri, and ecosystem health within two generations.
We're committed to achieving this vision, but we can't do it alone. We’re seeking new collaborators, such as foundations, corporations and trusts, to help rejuvenate this precious taonga for future generations.
Why partner with us for Te Waihora?
Investing in us means you’re joining a multigenerational ecological restoration kaupapa/project under the leadership and stewardship of the Te Waihora Co-Governance Group.
The Whakaora Te Waihora programme, guided by the Te Waihora Co-Governance Agreement, employs a robust programme management platform that safely handles multiple streams of investment from statutory bodies, trusts, and private entities to deliver proven results.
We’re proud of our ability to deliver complex mahi efficiently with our partners:
- Whakaora Te Waihora programme – phase one (2012-2017) successfully delivered a $10.1 million programme of works within a 1% variation of the budget.
- The Whakaora Te Ahuriri project successfully delivered a $3.15 million plan that saw the completion of a constructed wetland on schedule (despite the delivery challenge of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown), and found efficiencies to complete the project under budget.
- The Whakaora Te Waikēkēwai project is successfully delivering a $4.16 million project, led by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, to restore a culturally significant stream.
"Together, with our partners, we continue to deliver on mana whenua and community aspirations for Te Waihora and its catchment."
What we’re doing
Te Waihora’s co-governance partners—Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury), Selwyn District Council, Christchurch City Council, and the Department of Conservation—are leading Aotearoa’s most significant voluntary iwi/Crown partnership, delivering a bold cultural and ecological programme to restore the lake and realise the catchment’s full potential.
